Introduction

Multi-Protocol Label Switching (MPLS) is a standards-approved technology for speeding up network traffic flow that belongs to the family of packet-switched networks. MPLS involves setting up a specific path for a given sequence of packets, identified by a label put in each packet, thus saving the time needed for a router to look up the address to the next node to forward the packet to. MPLS works with the Internet Protocol (IP), Asynchronous Transport Mode (ATM), and frame relay network protocols.

MPLS Information

  • Introduction to MPLS.
Multiprotocol because it might be applied with any Layer 3 network protocol, although almost all of the interest is in using MPLS with IP traffic. But that doesn't actually give us any idea what MPLS does for you (we'll get to that momentarily). The site that explains all about MPLS from the begining with a featured diagrams. One can get idea about MPLS after studying the page. click here

  • Juniper Networks - IPv4 network to connect IPv6 domains.
Describes how MPLS can be used on an IPv4 network to connect IPv6 domains. A technique to connect IPv6 sites over an IPv4 Multiprotocol Label Switching (MPLS), then IPv6 islands are connected to each other across an IPv4 backbone enabled with MPLS label stacking while Multiprotocol Border Gateway Protocol (MP-BGP) is used to announce the IPv6 routes across these MPLS tunnels. All these are explained in detailed with an example. click here
